Lacoste, 5 minutes from Menerbes, is the next hill-top village along. It is quieter than Menerbes, perhaps it is still reeling from the excesses of the Marquis de Sade, whose old castle dominates the village. It is interesting to reflect that once upon a time all of this was under the sea, and these hill-top villages were underwater mounds inhabited by fish, who may also have referred to them as hill-top villages..
